Most Frequently Asked Questions About Our Intensive Rehabilitation Program
Who Benefits from The Intense Rehabilitation Program?
A rehabilitation program greatly benefits patients who experience difficulties with limitations in self-care: impaired mobility, balance and coordination; changes in memory, thought processing, reasoning, rational thinking, speech and communication problems; and swallowing disorders. These functional difficulties may be the result of stroke, hip fractures, amputations, neurological disorders (such as Parkinson's Disease), Muscular Dystrophy, or spinal cord and brain injuries.
Who Makes Up the Rehab Team?
The Treatment Team includes Physical, Occupational and Speech therapists; a social worker; and 24-hour rehabilitation nursing care. In addition, the team is under the direction of our Medical Director, Chung Hsu Lue, MD, who specializes in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Adjunct members of the team include a Psychiatrist and Psychologist.
What is the Role of the Medical Director?
Medical Director Chung Hsu Lue, M.D. specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation leads the interdisciplinary team, coordinates the medical treatment patients receive, coordinates the various components of the program and maintains the overall quality of services.
How Does a Rehabilitation Nurse Help?
Nurses specializing in rehabilitation provide standard nursing care in addition to helping patients relearn how to carry out the basic activities of daily living. They also educate patients about routine healthcare, such as how to follow a medication schedule, how to care for the skin, and how to manage transfers between a bed and a wheelchair. Nurses are closely involved in helping patients manage personal care issues, such as bathing and controlling incontinence. Under the supervision of Nurse Manager, the rehabilitation nurses work with patients in achieving maximum independence and work with the families in providing them instruction to care for the patient at home.
How Do Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy Help?
Our teams of therapists provide an intense coordinated program of therapeutic activities designed to improve strength, mobility and communication activity, and independence in self-care activities and safety in the home. Each individual therapist has specialized training and skills in the management of different aspects of human functionality, and they work together to help our patients achieve maximum independence.
Patients participate in 3 hours of therapy 5-6 times per week. All patients receive Physical and Occupational Therapy. Additionally, Speech Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, and Psychology services are available as needed. We make every effort to customize your loved one's care so that upon discharge, both the patient and the family feel prepared for the transition home. One way we do this is by performing home assessments prior to discharge: the clinical staff goes with the patient to their home and assesses if there are any suggestions we can offer to make the home environment safer.
How Can I Pay for a Rehabilitation Program?
Most insurance can cover an acute rehabilitation stay. Medicare may cover all or part of a rehab stay. Standard federal rules relating to your individual available hospital days apply. Private insurance and managed care payment are based on contractual agreements between the hospital and each provider. Our case managers and financial counselor can assist you with determining your payment options.
How Can I Get Myself or My Loved One Referred to Your Rehabilitation Program?
Referrals can be initiated by physicians, patients and their families, discharge planners, and allied health professionals. If you would like a tour of our Rehabilitation Unit, please feel free to call us at (626) 458-4767 to set up an appointment.
